Reading

We had a virtual author visit with Mel Taylor-Bessent. She told us all about her new book Race to Imagination Island.

In DT, this term we have been learning about seasonal British produce. After learning about British fruits and vegetables, we learnt about seasonal meat and fish. We also learnt about food safety and hygiene before making stuffed peppers. We chose several different types of seasonal vegetables to pout in our peppers.

Sound

We have been learning about sound in Science this half term. During this topic, we carried out lots of different investigations. Here we are investigating if sound travels through different materials in the same way.

In Computing, we have been coding our very own LEGO WeDo volcanic warning system. We built our warning system from LEGO and then built a code on the ipads. We needed our warning system to wait on green until it felt a tremor. The warning system would then move to red and an alarm would sound alerting people to the danger.

What a Wonderful World

In Class 4, we have been learning about our wonderful world and many of the naturally occurring physical landforms we can see like mountains and caves, as well as many of the natural disasters that can occur, with particular emphasis on volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. We have also been learning about how asking questions are important for our development as geographers. The children looked at photos of different natural disasters and generated enquiry questions based on them.

We then asked the question, 'How can water beat rock?'. We learnt about how water erodes and shapes limestone rock creating underground caves and caverns. Just before the Christmas holidays, we went on a field trip to carry out fieldwork at Cheddar Gorge Caves. We wanted to observe how water has created the caves at Cheddar and the features within them, like stalactites, stalagmites and pillars. Whilst we were there, we had a tour of Gough's cave and made fieldsketches of different areas of the cave. We also had an interactive video tour explaining how the Cheddar Yeo shaped the limestone at Cheddar while we walked through Cox's Cave.
